What are mountain gorillas?

Mountain gorillas are a sub species of the eastern gorillas uniquely known for living in high altitude montane forests. Mountain gorillas are only found in Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park in Uganda and the Virunga massif which forms a border point amongst Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s in the Virunga massif that the Volcanoes national park of Rwanda is located for gorilla trekking safari. Their eastern lowland cousins have less far and can be found in D.R. Congo’s Kahuzi-Bienga national park. Mgahinga national park on the Virunga massif in Uganda is another location for mountain gorilla tracking.

What is gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is when you enter into the tropical montane forests with expert rangers/ guides tracking habituated mountain gorilla families and allowed to follow them or spend 1 hour around them or 4 hours in case for habituation experience permit holders. During this tour, you will study mountain gorillas’ social behaviors, feeding habits and how they react to survive to different circumstances in the environment in their daily lives.

Detailed Uganda Gorilla trekking safari itinerary;

This 1 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari starts from Kigali one of Africa’s cleanest cities in Rwanda– the land of a thousand hills covered with green tropical and montane vegetation of more than 200 tree species and home to more than 250 bird species. The 3 hours requires you to have slept over in Kigali or a very morning arrival to allow you catch up with the trek. The other option is to arrive and travel to stay at a lodge near Uganda’s gorilla tracking park and wake up to head to the park headquarters.

Our guide will pick you from your hotel/ airport and get you to either Mgahinga or Bwindi impenetrable national parks that are home to the world’s highest population of mountain gorillas almost more than half (51% of 1063 individuals) of them are found in these parks. High mountain gorilla population guarantees you up to 100% chances to come across these gentle giants. There are also chances of finding chimpanzees and colobus monkeys in their nests or roaming around while tracking gorillas.
