Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest starts very early in the morning and will get you moving with expert guides who have knowledge of the forest trails and lead you to chimpanzee nests and play grounds. Rangers lead you in groups of 8 people to the assigned chimpanzee groups. The trek can last between 30 minutes to 1 hour before meeting the assigned chimpanzee group. You will then be allowed to follow the chimpanzees for 1 hour after which you will leave for other activities.

Chimpanzee habituation experience (CHX); This special excursion gets you to spend/ follow chimpanzees for up to 4 hours along with professional guides and doctors/ researchers who study and take extra care of the chimpanzees.

Cost of chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda

  • Chimpanzee trekking permits in Rwanda costs $150 per person while the special chimpanzee habituation permits cost $200 per person. Bookings are done in advance as the permits are given out on the first come first serve basis and limited to the number of chimpanzee families in the forest.

When is the best for chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda?

Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is done throughout the year and in all seasons (dry & wet). During the dry seasons of June- August and December- February attract more travelers as the forest trails are dry and easy to maneuver. In the wet seasons of March- May and September- November will require you to have rain gear and gumboots/studded hiking boots to be compatible with the rain & slippery ground.

Chimpanzee trekking rules in Rwanda

  • The minimum age for chimp trekking is 15 years and above.
  • Chimpanzees can catch your diseases; you must not enter the forest if you are sick.
  • Do not leave litter in the forest
  • Human waste should be buried 30cm (12 inches) deep
  • Keep as quiet as possible in the forest, you will see more.
  • Keep at least 10 meters (32.8 ft) from the chimpanzees at all times.
  • Do not mimic Chimpanzees’ vocalization (you do not know what you might be saying!)
  • Smoking, eating and drinking are not permitted during the tracking
  • Do not chase the Chimpanzees.
  • Do not use flash photography.
  • Visits are limited to 1 Hour with the Chimpanzees
  • It is recommended to wear waterproof hiking boots or shoes.
  • Trousers and long-sleeved shirts are advisable to protect against plant stings and insects.
