Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest starts very early in the morning and will get you moving with expert guides who have knowledge of the forest trails and lead you to chimpanzee nests and play grounds. Rangers lead you in groups of 8 people to the assigned chimpanzee groups. The trek can last between 30 minutes to 1 hour before meeting the assigned chimpanzee group. You will then be allowed to follow the chimpanzees for 1 hour after which you will leave for other activities.

Chimpanzee habituation experience (CHX); This special excursion gets you to spend/ follow chimpanzees for up to 4 hours along with professional guides and doctors/ researchers who study and take extra care of the chimpanzees.

During the dry seasons of June- August and December- February attract more travelers as the forest trails are dry and easy to maneuver. In the wet seasons of March- May and September- November will require you to have rain gear and gumboots/studded hiking boots to be compatible with the rain & slippery ground.
