What is gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking is where you will embark on hiking excursions into the montane tropical rain forests tracking after an assigned mountain gorilla family along with professional rangers/ guides. These gorilla families usually have members starting from 5 members up to largely 40 members with babies, their mothers led by silverbacks (alpha male mountain gorillas). Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done for over 150 tourists in groups of 8 people that are allowed to visit each of the 19 gorilla families per day.

Where to go gorilla trekking in Uganda?

  • Bwindi Impenetrable national park: located in Southwestern part of Uganda, Bwindi forest harbors the highest number of mountain gorillas on the planet with more than 50% of the world’s total remaining population. Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park has 4 gorilla tracking sectors i.e. Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma and Nkuringo sectors that have 19 gorilla families.
  • Mgahinga national park: The smallest game park in Uganda located on mountain Mgahinga; one of the volcanic mountains making up the Virunga massif, Mgahinga national park is also another gorilla trekking destination in Uganda with only one gorilla family called Nyakagezi family with up to 9 individuals.

When is the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done throughout the year. The dry seasons of June- August and December- February are more famous for gorilla trekking are considered a high season for gorilla trackers. The summer time is sunny thus keeping the tracking trails dry and easy to move over. The wet/ rainy seasons of September- November and March- May will require trackers to wear rain coats, gumboots/ studded hiking boots, gloves etc. to keep you comfortable from the seasonal rain and muddy hiking tracks.

Who is eligible for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is eligible for persons from the age of 15 years and above. This age bracket includes college students, researchers, travelers, business people, journalists, corporates, old people etc. for amazing stories and adventure. Special preparations are available for old trackers and disabled people with support of porters to reach out to their assigned gorilla families. Gorilla tracking activities also demands great physical fitness since it acquires hiking to up to 2,500 meters above sea level.
