Masai Mara wildebeest migration

Masai Mara reserve is Kenya’s most famous wildlife and tourism destination with one of the parks with the highest wildlife and bird concentration per square kilometer of its native species. The park becomes more interesting when more than a million wildebeests and zebras move from the southern side of Serengeti national park into the reserve in search for new pastures. Masai Mara wildebeest migration comes along with more interesting drama as the herds cross Nile crocodiles infested rivers and struggle to escape from being killed by big cats and predators for example wild dogs, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, lions among others

Masai Mara wildebeest migration safari packages

Each year, almost two million wildebeest migrate from Tanzania's Serengeti to the south of Kenya's Masai Mara in search of lush grazing grounds and life-giving water. This treacherous odessey is dictated by the seasons and where the rains are, the wildebeest are not far behind. This epic journey from north to south spans almost 3000 kilometres and is virtually endless. Wildebeest have no designated leaders and therefore the grazers often spilt up and travel in different directions. When these animals have to cross a river, they feel stressed and nervous because the crocodiles; often many wildebeest drown after being attacked by them.

Masai Mara wildebeest migration cycle/ pattern

May migration pattern

The Masai Mara wildebeest migration drama starts around May when the herds begin to pile up near the Mbalagweti and Grumeti Rivers, awaiting the crossing, a dangerous obstacle for the animals to the river native Nile crocodiles that are always lying in wait for food while lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs wait immediately at the river banks after the crossing.

June, July & August migration patterns

June is the start of the mating season and usually expect to see fierce fighting between competitive males/ bulls as they vie for the attention of females/ mates. By July, the herds are into the fresh grass of the Masai Mara, feeding on nutritious pastures, well settled and thus making it easy for mating and conceiving. During the course of their migration an estimated 250,000 wildebeest die – either from predator attacks, thirst, starvation or exhaustion. On reaching Masai Mara the herds spread out joining other herbivores they’ve found in the park for example elephants, giraffes, kobs, elands among others.

September & October migration pattern

During this time the immigrant wildebeest & zebra herds are in the Masai Mara of Kenya and go in search of fresh grass to graze. This is a wonderful time to be on safari in the Masai Mara giving some of the best sceneries of the park’s annual highlights. In October, the herds begin their long journey South back to the Serengeti following the new grass as new rains set in boosting growth of new pastures in the serengeti national park. The migrating herds once again go through the same obstacles of crocodile infested river crossings, hunting predators and the long journey.
