Mountain Kilimanjaro National Park

Crowned by the Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro National Park is one of Tanzania most popular parks and is a major hiking and climbing destination at 5,895 m, Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa with a snowy peak, the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 m above sea level and 4,900 m above its plateau base. It is also the highest volcano in the Eastern Hemisphere. The mountain anchors the park and its ecosystem as it’s encircled with montane forests and standing in isolation above extensive savannah plains where numerous mammals; elephants, Cape buffaloes, leopards and black rhinos are members of the Big Five and many other endangered species living there. Kilimanjaro is a dormant but not extinct volcano.

The national park is located 300 kilometres south of the equator in the Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. The park is located near the region of Moshi. The park includes the whole of Mount Kilimanjaro above the tree line and the surrounding montane forest belt above 1,820 metres (5,970 ft). It covers an area of 1,688 square kilometres, 2°50’–3°10’S 37°10’–37°40’E. The park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 and Natural Wonder of Africa in 2013. The Park Headquarters is at Marangu, about 44 Km from Moshi town and 86km from Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Major tourism activity in the Park is mountain climbing in which tourists climb the mountain by using routes available. Total climb normally takes five to six days and involves four or five overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts.

There are several routes including Marangu, the easiest to climb and therefore the more popular, Machame, Shira, Umbwe and Rongai are other routes. You can hike Mount Kilimanjaro without climbing gear and it has three cones; Kibo, 5,895 m (dormant), Mawenzi, 5,149 m (extinct) and Shira, 3,962 m (extinct)

During day hikes, some of the amazing attractions you will come across include;

Lake Chala, a beautiful filled caldera that sits on the far eastern edge of the park and forms part of the border with Kenya.

Marangu falls, a gorgeous waterfall with a rich cultural history not far off the Marangu route.

Ndoro waterfalls, another gorgeous waterfall on the western slope of Kilimanjaro where you can swim in its chilly waters.

  • Afro-alpine moorland band (2,800 m to 4,000 m)
  • Alpine desert band (4,000 m to 5,000 m)
  • Arctic summit (above 5,000 m)
